More and more video games for the Macintosh are coming into the marketplace. Whether you’re looking for action, adventure, role-playing, sports, kid’s games or any other type of video game, Macintosh now offers a rich and very diverse gaming experience. The newest Macintosh models also feature an application which is easy to install and lets users play Windows games on their Mac. Earlier Macintosh versions weren’t as friendly to gaming, but the current models have made the porting of many games easier. Whether your games are running on the Mac OS or through using a system that runs Windows, Macintosh provides performance which is about equal to a Windows PC with similar equipment.

Ideally, Macintosh video games would be created at the same time as the Windows version of the games. That would allow the original programmers to be on hand for any questions or troubleshooting that might be needed while developing the game. It would also allow simultaneous rollouts of both the Windows and Mac versions to the marketplace. This might be ideal, but in real life it rarely happens. There are only a few companies that simultaneously create games for Mac and Windows systems.

Typically, the high-end games that come to the Macintosh actually were originally developed for Microsoft Windows. Some time later, they are ported to the Mac by one of a few porting house companies. Two early video games that were ported to Mac were Microsoft Flight Simulator in 1986 and SimCity in 1988. One famous exception was 1993’s Myst, which actually was developed on the Mac and ported over to Windows a year later.

Because most Mac games are not developed at the same time as the version for Windows, the Macintosh rollout tends to lag behind the Windows version of the game, typically by several months. This is the usual situation for most high-budget games that are graphically intense and require a lot of time to play. There are many companies today, however, that develop original Mac video games that are more casual. These games feature simple graphics and are easy to play in short bursts of time. Downloadable games are examples. Various categories of these games are available, including puzzle games, arcade games, hidden object games, jigsaw games and others.

The fact that there is not enough shelf space for most brick and mortar stores to carry a full line of Mac video games is one thing to think about when you are looking for games for the Macintosh. As Mac has such a small market share it just doesn’t make sense to stock up on Mac games. It is easy, however, to do a Google search for Mac games-related websites.

Another thing Mac gamers can do is play PC games using the Windows operating system on their Macs. This can be done is several different ways. After Intel processors began to be used on Mac computers, users have been able to run the Mac operating system at the same time as Windows without even needing to reboot their system. Several free applications that allow users to do this are available online.

The gaming experience on a Macintosh is every bit as exciting and varied as on any PC, no whether you are playing a video game through Windows or an exclusive Mac game on the OS.
