Not everyone is going to have success out of the gate and be able to get signed by a major label, or any label for that matter. You may end up having to not only finance your own record, but be your own promoter as well. If this is unfamiliar ground for you, we have put together some guidelines that will hopefully make this a little bit easier on you.
Very few artists are experienced in this aspect of the industry and when you first start doing it, you can get a bit overwhelmed. To keep things leveled out, you have to make sure that you don’t take on too much. Otherwise, you are going to feel like you are strapped into a sinking ship with no chance of getting out.
It all starts with setting a goal for yourself in regards to what you want to achieve with your promotion. After you have that in mind, you can go about putting a game plan together to make that happen. You are much better off breaking everything down into simple steps so that you can see the progression over time and get some satisfaction as stages are completed.
When you are getting ready to move forward, you have to get a press kit together that you can distribute. This is more or less a little sales kit that you can put out that will hopefully attract people and promote both you and your album. It should include: a demo CD, photos, a bio, all of your contact information, and website links if you have them. Allow the person to be able to learn anything that they need about your music with a quick glance or a click on their computer.
The key to everything is going to be to make sure that you target the right audience. Assume you are doing a small local show that you want to promote to roll out your new CD. It would make no sense to spend money nationally on something like this. That being the case, try to get some local air time on an appropriate radio station and advertise in local papers.
It is very important at this stage that you do not waste money. In order to make sure that you are getting the most out of every dollar that you spend, you have to keep your efforts focused on the groups of people that are more likely to attend your show. If you target the wrong audience or go too broad with your targeted group, you could end up wasting precious funding that you may never get back.
While there are never any guarantees in this business, if you follow these basic guidelines, you will a much better chance of succeeding in promoting your classic music album and yourself as an artist than if you were to go about it haphazardly. In the end, you can only hope that all of your hard work pays off in the form of a contract with a record label that allows you to continue your dream of being a professional classical musician.
